After gathering all the above mentioned materials you are ready to start building your home made boat. Here are the step-by-step instructions in doing so:

(2) Drill holes on the edges of any pieces that will touch. The boat plans will identify where these holes should be drilled. Most boats require 1/4 – inch holes to be drilled at approximately 2 – inch intervals. Attach pieces together using plastic zip ties in the drilled holes. Use duct tape to cover the exterior portions of each seam; (3) Use epoxy paste to glue the seams together. Mix the epoxy paste by making epoxy glue according to the glue manufacturer directions and then adding fine sawdust until the mixture resembles the consistency of peanut butter. Use a spatula to apply the epoxy paste to each seam on the interior of the boat.

The seams should be approximately 1 – inch wide and 1/2 – inch deep at the center; (4) Remove the zip ties with pliers. Cover seams with fiberglass cloth soaked in epoxy glue. Cut 3 – inch wide fiberglass cloth into 3 – foot strips. Lay the fiberglass cloth strips onto the pasted seams. Mix additional epoxy glue. Use a paint brush to thoroughly wet the fiberglass cloth;

(5) continue to mix epoxy glue and wet the fiberglass cloth until all the cloth is completely saturated. Allow to dry several hours or overnight. Turn the boat over, remove the duct tape from the exterior seams and apply fiberglass cloth with epoxy glue in the same manner as was done to the interior seams. Allow to dry several hours or overnight. Use the same process to finish any bulkheads, seating or framing;

(6) finish the boat.

When the epoxy is dry use sandpaper to sand all the seams of the boat until they are completely smooth. Use fairing compound to fill any holes or imperfections. Wait for the fairing compound to dry and sand until smooth; (7) Paint or varnish the boat as desired.

Add cleats, oars, an engine, sails or any other hardware needed to make the boat functional. Launch the boat and check for leaks. Remove the boat from the water and cover any leaking areas with additional fiberglass cloth and epoxy if there are any leaks.
